Not everything runs uphill or down, so the third purpose of traction is secure steps traversing across a slope. To traverse a slope:
- Kick the side of the snowshoe into the hillside, engaging the crampons.
- Swing your heel hard towards the uphill slope, then stomp down, securing the snowshoe edge and crampons in the slope.
- Keep your weight balanced into the slope for grip as you step forward.
- Poles are also very helpful for balance and support, providing additional points of contact with the snow.
