Traversing

Not everything runs uphill or down, so the third purpose of traction is secure steps traversing across a slope. To traverse a slope:

  1. Kick the side of the snowshoe into the hillside, engaging the crampons.
  2. Swing your heel hard towards the uphill slope, then stomp down, securing the snowshoe edge and crampons in the slope.
  3. Keep your weight balanced into the slope for grip as you step forward.
  4. Poles are also very helpful for balance and support, providing additional points of contact with the snow.
